Disapointed
I am so disappointed that there will be no puppies this spring.
I bred Daisy to Domino 2 times on March 8th and March 10th. The breeding looked very successful because they locked together for 10 minutes.
I was sure Daisy was pregnant because she was showing some signs common to dog pregnancies such as eating more, sleeping more, her back looked wider, her nipples got bigger, her stomach felt a little more lumpy and she had some discharge.
Although I noticed her stomach was not getting "swollen". I took her to the vet for an ultrasound 1 week before her due date, which would have been May 13th, the vet told me they found no puppies on the ultrasound. The vet said because the act of breeding took place Daisy probably went into a "false pregnancy" which is common for female dogs that are not spayed. The vet also said that Domino might not have a high sperm count and that some male dogs just don't breed because of that.
I was so upset I could have cried. I have never heard of this. I thought breeding dogs would be easier than this. I had 4 people on my waiting list for puppies and I had to e-mail them and tell them sorry there are no puppies. I had not taken any deposits yet, I was planning on waiting for the pups to be born. But now there are no puppies. Domino and Bonnie moved to Oregon. And because of things happening in our lives this fall we won't be able to breed Daisy for another 2 years. I am so disappointed and crushed.
I had everything ready for the puppies. I turned my laundry room into the "puppy room", I ordered a puppy kit on line, ect. I was all prepared. Its terrible when you plan for something and you are let down.
I would like another dog for Daisy to play with and we were planning on keeping one of her puppies but not now.
Sorry to everyone who was on my waiting list and who was interested in puppies. I am just as shocked and disappointed as you are.
So Sorry :(

Puppy Development
Australian Shepherds go into heat every 6 months. There are four stages to the heat cycle:
1. The first stage is Proestrus: It begins with about 10 days of bleeding and constant urine marking. Females will resist a male at this time because they are not fertile.
2. The second stage is Estrus: This stage also last about 10 days. The bleeding has now ended and now the female dog is fertil and ready to breed.
3. The third stage is Diestrus: This is the stage after mating. The female becomes pregnant for about 58-63 days and will have about 6-9 puppies in a litter.
4.The fourth stage is Anestrus: This is the stage if the female does not get pregnant. It means the heat is over and males are no longer attracted to the female. Anestrus last untill the next Proestrus cycle begins.
Week 1 of a dog pregnancy: The breeding between the dogs take place. The sperm reaches the eggs and fertilization occurs.
Week 2: The fertilized eggs move to the uterus for implantation.
Week 3: Implantation takes place and the puppies begin to develop. Mama dog may have appetite changes. Daisy May's appetite increased a lot.
Week 4: Puppies spinal chords, legs, toes and facial features develop. I wasn't sure if Daisy was pregnant at this point. There didn't seem to be any changes to her behavior or her body yet.
Week 5: Puppies organs develop and they begin to look more like dogs. Puppies will now start to gain lots of weight. I still could not tell if Daisy was pregnant. No outward signs yet.
Week 6: Puppies eye lids will develop but will stay closed until about 10 days after birth. Pups skeletons begins to solidify. I noticed Daisy's belly was a little bit more round and her nipples seemed redder and bigger. She also threw up once for no reason.
Week 7: Puppies are well developed now. Hair starts to appear on their bodies. Mama dogs breasts are full of colostrum and she might seem more tired. Daisy's has gained some weight and she looks wider than before. Her breasts are bigger to. She seems more tired. For most dogs they don't show any outward signs that they are pregnant until the last week, then their stomachs really get big.
Week 8:-9: Puppies are now crowded in the uterus. They don't move as much since they are preparing for birth. Mama dog might seem uncomfortable, restless, and anxious. She goes into nesting mode and might dig in her whelping box.
